Jagan Offers 10% Discount On Mobiles For Women

On the occasion of International Women’s Day celebrated on March 8, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has decided to give 10 per cent discount on every purchase of mobile phone by women, downloading Disha app, in select shopping centres on that day. Accordingly, he asked for 2,000 stands to be kept ready with OR codes to enable downloading Disha app designed by the Andhra Pradesh government for the safety and security of women.

It is still not clear how the YCP government would choose the stores where the special discount would be offered for women but no doubt, all the shops will be in Andhra Pradesh.

Jagan also asked the officials to erect hoardings to create awareness about the app mentioning the action being taken under the initiative. Immediately after the launch of the app, there was a lot of hype created about it but the mobile application did not garner many downloads, even when it was aimed at providing security to women on the move. In a bid to increase the app’s publicity, Jagan seems to have decided to link it up with the 10 per cent discount offer.

Reviewing the arrangements being made for the International Women’s Day and Nadu-Nedu programmes, the CM also directed officials to hold a short film contest on women’s security and women empowerment. He said that two women constables from each department should be felicitated. He declared special day off on March 8 for all the women working in the police wing.

Apart from this, the CM also showered several sops for women employees like annual health check-up for all Anganwadi employees, five additional casual leaves for women employees, Rs 5 lakh grant for Non-Gazetted Women Employees Association. He also suggested that an MoU be inked between SERP, MEPMA and HLL to keep available sanitary pads in all the Cheyutha kirana stores.

It has to be seen how many women would buy cell phones availing the 10 per cent discount offered by the YCP government.
