Over 1 lakh Engineering Seats fell vacant
The first phase of Engineering counseling has been a bitter shock to the colleges in the state as more than 1 lakh seats remained vacant.
As per the statistics, Out of 2,34,488 Engineering and Pharmacy seats, only 1,26,390 were filled and this development left 1,08,098 seats vacant. About 13 colleges recorded 'zero admissions', 20 colleges registered admissions 5 seats each and another 14 colleges got 6-10 seats each. While two colleges had admissions of 900-plus, one college had been between the 801-900 range and about 7 colleges had admissions of 701-800 range.
Out of 2,18,893 students who were qualified for engineering, only 1,30,290 turned up for the certificate verification counseling. Out of them, 1,28,724 students were allowed for the first phase counseling and 1,26,390 were allotted seats.
This pathetic situation of Engineering counseling is going to lead to the shut down of several colleges in the near future. College managements have been blaming the agitations in the state for the poor turnout. Several students skipped counseling and decided to join colleges in neighboring states fearing the political turmoil which could disrupt the academic activities.
