War On Judiciary: Jagan Takes It To Next Level

The war of words between the state government and the judiciary, which has been underway for the last few months, has taken an ugly turn with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy writing a letter to Chief Justice of India Justice S.A. Bobde complaining against a senior Supreme Court judge and some AP High Court judges too.

In the letter, the AP CM has urged the CJI to “consider initiating such steps as may be considered fit and proper, to ensure that the state judiciary’s neutrality is maintained.”

On Saturday night, copies of the letter were released to mediapersons by Ajeya Kallam, adviser to the state government and former Chief Secretary to AP.

Many annexures to letter

The letter was dated October 6, the day when Jagan met Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss to discuss various issues related to the state and also seek release of pending GST funds and others promised as part of the AP Reorganisation Act.

In the annexure to the letter written to the CJI, Jagan expressed “pain and anguish” that the “august institution of the high court is being used to destabilise and topple the democratically elected government in the state.”

Jagan also submitted an annexure listing out various instances where matters of importance to the main opposition party were allocated to select judges in the high court to get verdicts as they desired.

The AP CM also made a mention of the investigation launched by the state government against former Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu in connection with construction of the capital at Amaravati.

The letter also referred to the harsh observations of the High Court on social media posts against the judiciary allegedly being circulated by the YCP leaders. The CM reminded that when the advocate-general pointed out that the High Court was unfairly hostile towards the state government, the standing council in the court offered to withdraw the pleadings and incorporate an amended paragraph.

Jagan also referred to the orders of the High Court on issues ranging from the fire mishap at a Covid-19 care centre to the arrest of Atchennaidu in Visakhapatnam and violation of Covid-19 guidelines by the YCP MLAs.

Secret plan

Meanwhile, opposition say that a war is being waged against the judiciary only to tarnish its image. They also see one other motive behind the whole argument.

In the next few months, all cases filed by the Enforcement Directorate and the CBI would come up for hearing in the courts, following the Supreme Court directions that investigation into the cases filed against elected representatives should be expedited. In case, the courts pronounce verdicts against Jagan in connection with these cases, then the YCP leaders would start campaigning that things have happened as they have expected and tell people that the courts have done injustice to their leader, Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, and sent him to the jail.

Opposition TDP saying that Jagan had started the smear campaign against the judiciary as he was able to perceive that he would be sentenced to severe punishment, in connection with the money laundering cases.
