Finally, after more than two and a half months later, Parliament Speaker Sumitra Mahajan has accepted the resignations of the five YSRCP MPs. The Speaker's office has issued an official bulletin confirming the same.
In a bid to gain AP people's trust for their agitation for the Special Category Status and fulfillment of the promises made to the state during bifurcation, YSRCP MPs Mekapati Rajamohanreddy, YV Subbareddy, Mithun Reddy, V Varaprasad Rao and YS Avinash Reddy tendered their resignation on April 6.
However, the Speaker kept the resignations on hold, which led to numerous political mudslinging from the opposition leaders. The resigned MPs met with the Speaker twice and requested her to accept their resignations.
Even though the resignations have been accepted, there is no chance of a by-election since the Election Commission will not hold an election within a year as per the Section 151A in The Representation of the People Act, 1951.
