One Day Ban On NDTV

One Day Ban On NDTV

The government has taken the NDTV India Hindi channel off air for a day, on 9th November, for allegedly revealing crucial information during its coverage of the Pathankot terror attacks in January.

The Information & Broadcasting ministry has invoked the powers under the Cable TV Networks (Regulation) Act to impose this ban on NDTV after an inter-ministerial committee instituted by it approved the proposal. This is the first time such a ban has been imposed on a TV channel.

'NDTV has revealed strategically sensitive information during its report on the attacks that could have compromised the national security as well as endangered the lives of civilians and army personnel,' the committee allegedly said.

In a statement, NDTV described the ban as an attack on media freedom and added, "The order shocking. Every channel and newspaper had similar coverage but NDTV has been singled out. In fact NDTV's coverage was particularly balanced. After the dark days of the emergency when the press was fettered, it is extraordinary that NDTV is being proceeded against in this manner. NDTV is examining all options in this matter."

The channel can appeal the order before a tribunal.
