Over 44 Lakh Doses of Covid-19 Vaccine Gets Wasted

On one hand, India is facing a shortage of Covid-19 vaccine and an RTI data reveals that over 44.78 lakh doses of vaccine got wasted till April 11th. An RTI was filed by an activist Vivek Pandey on the vaccine supply and usage that unraveled some shocking facts.

The state of Tamil Nadu reports the highest wastage with 12.10 percent which means 12 doses get wasted out of the 100. Haryana, Punjab, Manipur and Telangana are the following states with 9.74 percent, 8.12 percent, 7.8 percent and 7.55 percent respectively. A few weeks back Telangana was in news for wastage of vaccine but the state government has categorically denied it.

Kerala, West Bengal, Himachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Goa, Daman and Diu, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep states posted zero wastage and that’s commendable from them.

The RTI was revealed that Maharashtra is the top vaccination state and it wastes about 3.2 percent while Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state Gujarat has reported 3.8 percent of vaccine wastage.

In order to boost the vaccine supply, the Centre has fast tracked the approvals for vaccine from foreign countries simultaneously Serum Institute and Bharat Biotech companies are allotted Rs 3000 crore and Rs 1500 crore respectively by the Centre.
