In a humiliation to the Karnataka BJP and more importantly for the mining Reddy brothers, the Congress has emerged victorious in Bellary constituency. Since 2004, this segment has become a fortress for the Gali Janardhan Reddy (eventually for BJP).
The Reddy's close aide Sriramulu had represented this Parliament constituency but he quit the MP post as he contested for the assembly which were held earlier this year. So a by-poll occurred. Sriramulu's sister V Shantha has contested this by-poll on behalf of BJP while VS Ugrappa was the Congress-JDS alliance candidate. Shantha lost with a huge margin resulting in a big blow to the Gali brothers. VS Ugrappa got the majority of 2 lakhs votes.
However, before the polls, it's Gali's statements that resulted in transfer of votes. During the election campaign, Gali had cursed former CM Siddharamaiah as the latter's son passed away due to illness. "You distanced me from my family and so God has punished you," said Gali who spent quite a few years in jail in connection with mining scam.
Whatever it is, such remarks are never appreciated by the people anywhere in the country and so Gali had to pay the price.
