After the merger of Congress Legislature Party (CLP) into TRS, Asauddin Owaisi-led All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has become the 'second largest party' in Telangana Legislative Assembly. With this AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi stated that his party will approach the Telangana Speaker Pocharam Srinivas Reddy to accord 'Opposition Status' to AIMIM. Asaduddin has demanded that Congress leader Bhatti Vikramarka should be removed as LoP (Leader of Opposition) and AIMIM should be given the LoP (Leader of Opposition) position in Telangana Assembly.
AIMIM has won 7 Assembly constituencies in 2018 general polls. AIMIM, which had won seven MLA seats in 2014, has retained all its seats in 2018. Its sitting MLAs won from Chandrayangutta, Bahadurpura, Karwan, Charminar, Yakutpura, Malakpet and Nampally Assembly constituencies. It can be noted that the MIM has contested in 8 seats out of total 119 Assembly constituencies while it had supported ruling TRS in the remaining 111 constituencies. MIM had fielded its candidate Mirza Rahmat Baig in Rajendranagar Assembly as an additional seat this time. However, it had lost to TRS candidate Prakash Goud in Rajendranagar. So, this was the only seat where it had lost out of the contested 8 seats.
Even as the protests over the merger of CLP into TRSLP continue, MIM's fresh demand to grant Opposition Status is receiving severe flak from many as it had a pre-poll understanding with the TRS.
