Her comments, which some interpreted as downplaying the importance of voting, have sparked criticism from those who view voting as a fundamental civic duty.
In a media meet, when questioned about not voting during the recent election, Jyothika mentioned being out of town and emphasized the existence of online voting, saying, “I’m out of town and have some important work coming my way. And there is online voting too. Don’t think that my life will be in public all the time”. This has drawn ire from citizens who prioritize active participation in democratic processes.
Critics of Jyothika’s explanation have highlighted the lengths they went to ensure their vote counted, such as enduring long lines under the sun and adjusting travel plans. At the same time, online voting is available in India only for citizens who are older than 85 years, and people with disabilities but not for celebrities like Jyothika. Many argue that celebrities and influencers should lead by example and encourage their followers to participate in elections, given the significant impact of every vote on shaping the course of a nation.
More than any work, casting a vote is the most important thing to do in a democracy. Looks like, Jyothika forgot that.
