Vennela Kishore has earned good name as talented comedian. Urban youth likes his style of comedy and he is yet to enter the star comedians league. Before doing that Vennela Kishore tried his hand at direction. Vennela 1 1/2 is his first attempt as a director. Did he prove to be a good director? Read on...
What is it about?
The story is set in Bangkok. Krishna (Chaitanya) is a happy go lucky guy who falls for Vennela (Monal Gajjar) in first sight. However, he comes to know that she was engaged to some other person, but tries his luck. Vennela too loves him, but realizes that he is a fraud. Rest of the story is about how they work out their differences.
Chaitanya is alright. He is a good dancer and he exhibits his skills in couple of songs. Monal Gajjar has good looks but is a very poor performer. Even an actor of Brahmanandam's caliber fails if the writing is so bad. Vennela Kishore is average. All other characters are either eccentric or extremely crazy.
On the Technical Front:
Vennela 1 1/2 fails on the technical front too. None of the technicians have put up at least an average show. Dialogues are mediocre and background score is pathetic. Songs are unbearable to listen to. Cinematography is weak and editing is bizarre.
As a director Kishore failed to extract good output from any of his technicians. Quiet understandable! Because he himself failed utterly as a writer and director. By now Kishore should have known that direction is a different ball game altogether. Wait, he has already directed 'Jaffa' with Brahmanandam as the lead. Hope it would be fine.
Initial scenes itself gives you a clear picture about what to expect in the next 2 hours. In the first hour there are ample perverted, eccentric scenes that may suit the tastes of few audiences. Main plot of the film is very weak and poorly written. None of the so called twists worked out.
Weakness of the director has been magnified in those scenes. Comedy is mostly low brow. There is not a sensible comedy one liner or a good scene to laugh out loud. It is very crass and only suits the audiences with cheap sense of humor. Second half turns out to be horrible. All the characters that are introduced in the second hour makes our life even more miserable.
There aren't any cheap jokes in this hour. Vennela Kishore had no clue how to take this film to climax by spending sixty minutes in between. Hence he tried to infuse comedy by force, which turned out to be sheer torture. Only thing we can do is wait until the titles roll or to search for the immediate exit.
Verdict: Vennela 1 1/2 is cheap and horrible and painful and what not?
