After meeting AP cinematography minister Perni Nani, director Ram Gopal Varma got a clear picture of the ticket prices controversy. Yet again in a series of tweets, RGV explained the understanding the AP government has on movie ticket prices and he indirectly meant that the state government lacked better thoughtfulness on the whole subject.
“Is the AP government putting a restriction on the sale price of any other privately manufactured product apart from films? How can a Rs 500 cr RRR film and a film costing just Rs 1 cr be forced to sell at the same ticket price?” RGV questioned.
On benefit shows and remuneration of heroes, RGV further asked, “If benefit shows are put and priced high and people willingly buy won’t the government also be making more money? Why should the government have a problem in, why the producer is paying how much to a star, unless it has a prior knowledge of some criminal intimidation or extortion by the film stars trying to extract money from the producer?”
Taking pot shots, RGV wrote, “The cinematography act 1955 to be suddenly dug out by AP govt after 70 years and randomly implemented is unacceptable and it is necessary that the act itself should be challenged in court.”
Citing the Articles of Indian Constitution, RGV added, “Many concerned calling for a press conference in Mumbai to attract nationwide attention on the huge discrimination between random applications of law in AP state in a direct violation of article 14. Imposing limitations to the extent of curtailing the Fundamental Rights guaranteed under article 19(1)a of the Constitution without due process would tantamount to a mis exercise of authority.”
Finally suggesting four options, RGV proposed to leave the ticket prices and number shows to the producers. Picture Time, Caravan Talkies, Nova Cinemaz were the first three options and the final one was to encourage people to convert their available empty spaces like large rooms, garages, unused go-downs etc into mini theatres.
Concluding RGV requested the media to play an active role in finding a solution for this problem. RGV really brought out of the box options for ticket prices controversy and they might not practically work in AP.
