Shyam Singha Roy Has A Tricky Screenplay: Director

Natural Star Nani’s epic love story Shyam Singha Roy directed by Rahul Sankrityan is all set for release on 24th of this month. Sai Pallavi, Krithi Shetty played heroines in the film produced by Venkat Boyanapalli. The director made some interesting revelations during his meet with scribes.

Why could you make only 3 films in all these years?
I made my first film The End without proper knowledge. I even left my job, to pursue career in industry. I narrated different stories to producers who rejected them right away. Then I realized the importance of commercial elements in movies. I at once thought of becoming a taxi driver and registered for Ola as well. By the time, Taxiwala script came to my mind. It worked well. The subjects I worked on were too experimental. Then, I took Satyadev Janga’s point and developed it. That’s how Shyam Singha Roy happened.

What really excited you when you heard the point?
The story is set in Bengal backdrop which excited me to the core and then the characters are also very interesting. We’ve developed the script and changed the climax part as well.

Why did you choose Bengal backdrop as Devadasi system was there in Telugu states as well?
The real story starts in Bengal, but it discusses various other issues other. It talks about evil practices. Devadasi system is not the main subject. We’re not giving any social message.

Who was the original choice for the movie?
After developing the script, I approached only Nani. I don’t see any other actor for this performance-oriented role. I suggested Sai Pallavi’s name for the female lead and Nani too gave his nod. Nani and Krithi Shetty’s is also a very fresh track. Madonna’s character is also very interesting.

What was Nani’s reaction when he first heard the story?
I discussed some other subject with Nani earlier, which didn’t materialize. However, he gave green signal to Shyam Singha Roy’s story in single sitting. When I approached him again with bounded script, he cautioned me to be very careful in making this one, as it has such depth. Nani is one actor who can do any given role. I got full confidence after watching his Jersey.

Nani is an entertainer, but did you feel it risky to make this kind of film with him?
We made sure the film has all the elements one would expect from Nani. It’s a tricky screenplay. If we at the beginning itself narrate the main point, audience may not connect to it. So, we chose the commercial format.

What do you say about excess of budget spent on the movie?
The subject demands high budget and if we can’t spend, it’s unnecessary to make this film. More than the market calculations, the subject has the weight. Luckily, we got Venkat Boyanapalli.

What’s the toughest part to shoot in the film?
The climax sequences was the challenging part. I’ll talk about it, after the film’s release.

What’s your next project?
I’ve prepared script of my next movie. It delas with time travel subject.
