Oppenheimer vs Barbie: Who won the box-office race?

The Indian Box Office witnessed a whirlwind yesterday, but surprisingly, it was not due to Indian films. Instead, two Hollywood flicks, Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” and Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” stormed the screens worldwide. Both films carried immense expectations, and let’s delve into the various aspects of these highly anticipated movies and understand which film worked at the box office.

Cast and Crew:
“Oppenheimer,” helmed by acclaimed director Christopher Nolan, known for masterpieces like “Inception,” “The Batman Trilogy,” “Interstellar,” “Dunkirk,” and “Tenet,” boasts a star-studded cast including Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr, Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, and Florence Pugh.

On the other hand, “Barbie” is directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Greta Gerwig and features leading talents, Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.

Genre:
The two films belong to entirely different genres. “Oppenheimer” is a gripping biographical thriller depicting the story of physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, who created the nuclear bomb that devastated Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan. Conversely, “Barbie” is a fantasy comedy based on the beloved Barbie fashion dolls.

Budget:
“Oppenheimer” reportedly had a budget of $100 million (Rs. 821 crores) and a runtime of 182 minutes. On the other hand, “Barbie” was made with a budget of $145 million (Rs. 1190 crores) and ran for 114 minutes. “Oppenheimer” was released across 3600 screens in North America, while “Barbie” hit 4200 screens across the same region.

Craze in India:
Despite “Barbie” generating significant anticipation worldwide, “Oppenheimer” dominates India. Christopher Nolan’s vast fanbase in the country has resulted in exceptional advance bookings for “Oppenheimer.” Reports indicated that over 90,000 tickets had been booked across Indian multiplexes for the film on the release day. In contrast, “Barbie” managed to secure 160,000 ticket bookings.

Box-Office:
Barbie has garnered a remarkable $22.3 million so far from previews in the USA, and Nolan’s Oppenheimer generated a revenue of $10.5 million from the premieres. However, in India, Oppenheimer received a positive response over Barbie and has an edge in impressing the audiences.
