Actor Rajpal Yadav surrendered to the Tihar jail authorities at 4 pm on Thursday as the Delhi High Court refused to grant him relief in connection with his cheque-bounce case filed by M/s Murali Projects Pvt. Ltd. On Wednesday, Yadav sought for extension of deadline for surrender but the High Court refused to hear his plea.
The actor’s counsel informed the court that his client had arranged Rs 50 lakh and needs one more week for the payment. An amount of Rs 9 crore is still payable to the complainant by the actor.
The case against Yadav and his wife dates back to 2018 when a magisterial court in Delhi convicted the actor and his wife in connection with cheque-bounce cases following a complaint by M/s Murali Projects Pvt. Ltd. Then the court sentenced him to six-months’ imprisonment.
In 2019, a sessions court upheld the conviction and the actor challenged this in the Delhi High Court. Yadav’s counsel told the court that the financial crisis resulted as the movie produced with the money taken from the financier bombed at the box office.
In June 2024, the high court temporarily suspended his conviction urging him to adopt “sincere and genuine measures” to resolve the issue amicably with the opposite party.
On February 2, the court refused to extend the deadline as he had repeatedly breached his undertakings to the court to repay Rs 1.35 crore in each of the seven cases filed against him by the complainant.
At the same time, the court directed that the amount already deposited with the Registrar General of the high court be released to the complainant. Yadav deposited two demand drafts of Rs 75 lakh each with the Registrar General so far.
