Oscar Winner: Why the Sudden Racism Debate?

As we had reported earlier in the day today, the Academy has announced the winners of the prestigious Oscar awards for the year 2026 a short while back. Now there is an interesting discussion happening about the winner of the best actor award, Michael B Jordan.

The fundamental point to be noted here is that Timothy Chalamet had been the front runner to win the Oscars 2026 for a while now. The odds were 43% in his favour to win the Oscars for the best actor while other all other actors, including Michael B Jordan had less than double digit chances.

However, things change drastically after the prestigious BAFTA event that was held later last year. There was an extremely unfortunate incident that happened at this British award, ceremony while Michael B Jordan was on stage.

During the presentation, Michael was on the stage during which a member of the audience with a Tourette medical condition slurred a racial line at him. This immediately triggered a lot of backlash and the awards committee sincerely apologised for the same.

A huge controversy broke out on cultural and racial fronts and the Academy was nearly pressurised into taking a position on this matter.

A few people are arguing that the Academy might have compensated Michael Jordan for the earlier unfortunate racial incident at BAFTA by making a last minute change and according him with the Oscar in place of the otherwise favourite Timothy.

But at the same time, another section argues that Michael Jordan is one of the most gifted actors of this generation, and he truly deserves this award for his incredible performances, not just in Sinners, but also over the years.
