Dhurandhar Setting a Big Rule for Pan-India Sequels ?

Aditya Dhar’s money spinning franchise Dhurandhar has redefined Bollywood’s long standing charisma after a long gap. While the first part has revived the lost charisma of Hindi cinema, the second part has just showcased the real potential of Bollywood to the entire world. Dhurandhar is now the only franchise with its two films in the prestigious 1000 Crore club.

As the sequel ‘Dhurandhar The Revenge’ continues its record breaking spree, the pressure now keeps mounting on the upcoming biggies because it will be an uphill task to surpass the new yardstick of 1000 crores to secure the pan-India blockbuster tag from now onwards. Particularly, sequel films will have their task cut out to touch the mark.

While some of the biggest sequels from South India like Baahubali 2, KGF 2 and Pushpa 2 did achieve the benchmark of 1000 Crores even before Dhurandhar 2 due to the huge anticipation in audiences and also because of the massive success of their predecessors in the Hindi market, the upcoming sequels will face huge pressure to achieve this feat due to the changing box office dynamics and other factors.

Some of the upcoming sequels include Kalki 2, Salaar 2, Jailer 2 and Devara 2. All these sequels will hit the screens only after a considerable gap since the release of their first parts. Moreover, the genres of these films are quite different from Dhurandhar which benefitted largely due to the patriotic fervor and way the director cleverly weaved the fictional story inspired by real events with a tinge of nationalism.

If these sequels fail to touch the four digit mark, they will be rated as average grossers at the box office. So, Telugu and other South filmmakers should reassess their scripts and make sure that they have the potential to strike a chord with all sections of moviegoers if they really have an ambition to deliver proper commercial success with these sequels.
