Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2, sequel to his 2023 blockbuster with the same name, has been in the news for wrong reasons in recent times due to the uncertainty over the release date, delay in shooting formalities and needless confusion about cameos. Amid all this chaos, a video footage from the film got leaked recently much to the shock of the makers and Rajinikanth’s fans.
Meanwhile, Tamil media broke a big news about this much anticipated project. As per the latest reports in Kollywood circles, the digital rights of Jailer 2 have been snapped for a staggering 160 Crores by Amazon Prime Video platform, setting a new record for Tamil films. This is reportedly the highest ever digital deal sealed by a Tamil film, surpassing the previous OTT records achieved by films like Jailer, Leo, Thug Life and Coolie.
This is one helluva of a deal given that the same Amazon Prime Video paid approximately Rs. 75 crores for the original Jailer in 2023. Negotiations between the producer and the streaming platform have been going on for a year now. Last year, the same platform shelled out 120 crores for Coolie, Rajinikanth’s collaboration with Lokesh Kanagaraj. Now, Jailer 2 deal seems to have eclipsed that figure and set a new benchmark for upcoming films.
Sun Pictures, which has the reputation for highly guarding all infos about its projects, has not made any official announcement about this news so far. But, Kollywood media is buzzing about the handsome deal secured by Jailer 2. The fact that the first part of this Nelson Dilip Kumar directional emerged as a roaring box office hit all over the country with more than 600 Crores gross and Rajinikanth’s strong stardom, the projected figures has some credibility to believe.
If the news turns out to be true, Jailer 2 is likely to recover a significant portion of its budget even before the film hits theatres. Moreover, this fantastic deal might generate more buzz on the film amid ongoing rumours about the release date.
Interestingly, it was earlier rumoured that Prabhas and Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s highly anticipated Spirit also locked a similar OTT deal of around ₹160 crores, though it was never officially confirmed by reliable sources. Now, with Jailer 2 reportedly quoting the same figure, the buzz around the film has only grown further in trade circles and among fans.
Jailer 2 will see Rajinikanth returning as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian and also retains the core cast including Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, Mirnaa, and Vinayakan. S. J. Suryah has been cast as the prime antagonist and Kannada star Shiva Rajkumar and Vijay Sethupathi are reprising cameos. Mohanlal’s return as Mathew is also confirmed.
