The Tamil Film Producers Council, the other day, took two important decisions.
The Council has warned that they will produce films only under a revenue-sharing model, or else they will halt production. This will be applicable for all small, medium, and big films.
If a movie performs well and generates profits, everyone shares in them; otherwise, they do not. Tamil producers have announced that they will make films only if this condition is adhered to.
On the other hand, they also announced that they are not in game for the 8 weeks OTT window and the ongoing 4 Weeks OTT window is only financially sustainable.
The first decision has become a topic of discussion every where.
Can Telugu Producers bring this rule in Tollywood as well? Can they put their foot down and say enough is enough?
The industry is bleeding. The Producers are unhappy and the trade is struggling. But then, there are heroes who are still in denial and are particular about their remunerations.
We have to take two examples here.
A young hero who delivered back to back hits took Nizam rights of a film as a part of his remuneration. He sold it to a big distributor in Nizam. The movie was a disaster and surprisingly there was no opening too.
The rights were acquired for 8 Crore and could not even collect 1 Crore Share in Nizam. The actor had to compensate for the losses. He is feeling cheated now.
And then, there is another young hero who made a film with a happening Production House.
The hero took 3 Crore Rupees and the rights of Nizam and Guntur. The director took Vizag rights. The movie did not fare well at the box office. The hero now says he lost 6 Crore (when compared to his remuneration) and owes not to do a film in sharing in future.
He is ready to float his own banner if necessary but will not do for sharing.
What heroes do not understand here is, the money they lost now is supposed to be the loss of the Producer.
If they feel they are cheated when they lost money, producers should feel the heroes are cheating them.
Heroes take credit for every rupee that comes to a film and the disaster result should also be theirs. It is selfish to take their money and live producers and buyers to their fate especially when the market is really harsh.
That is the reason why we see many medium-range heroes are left without films.
And there are stars who are taking 3 years for a film. Theaters are closing down in the Summer without shows. Audiences are losing the habit of coming to theaters.
Producers are feeding the OTTs with four weeks windows to compensate their loses. They are denying Percentage system to theaters which means 40% Single Screens will be closed in next one year or so.
If the heroes do not realize, the fall is near. Forget about making Pan-India films, by the time, their big spectacle films come to theaters, there will be no theaters left.
