Can Varanasi Win the IMAX Battle Against Hollywood?

Varanasi is undoubtedly the most anticipated Indian film of 2027, and trade circles are already predicting a massive overseas run for the SS Rajamouli directorial after the success of RRR. However, a new challenge may emerge from Hollywood, especially in the IMAX format.

Unlike many films that are simply converted to IMAX after filming, Varanasi is being designed and shot to take full advantage of the IMAX experience. On the other hand, the current Hollywood lineup between late March and mid-April 2027 looks packed with major IMAX releases.

Godzilla x Kong: Supernova is scheduled for a March 26, 2027 release, while Panic Carefully is also confirmed for IMAX screens on April 9, 2027. Industry trackers expect more big-budget titles to join the race in the coming months, making the IMAX screen availability a bit tighter.

As premium large-format screens contribute a sizable share of revenue for big films, sharing screens with Hollywood biggies could reduce Varanasi’s access to limited locations and hence reduce the collections a bit.

Even if regular screens remain unaffected, the battle for IMAX screens abroad could be something the makers of Varanasi will be closely monitoring ahead of the film’s release on April 7, 2027.

On the other hand, India’s biggest problem is the limited number of true IMAX theatres. Although several multiplexes advertise IMAX screens, only a small number can deliver the full experience. So, will cities like Hyderabad have an IMAX screen built before the release, and how all this will pan out needs to be seen in the days to come.
