Vishwanath & Sons is winning praise for its emotional storytelling, strong performances, and refreshing treatment of an age-gap romance between Suriya and Mamitha Baiju. One aspect that has generated a lot of discussion among audiences is the film’s open ending.
In an exclusive conversation with Gulte pro, director Venky Atluri revealed the thought process behind choosing such an unusual climax. Venky revealed the decision was influenced by Suriya himself.
“After the project was finalized, Suriya sir called me and suggested that since he was coming off a mass entertainer like Karuppu, Vishwanath & Sons should feel different and avoid endings associated with typical age-gap love stories”.
The ace director also added that he had initially written a conventional happy-ending version where the lead pair has a happily ever after kind of scenario. However, after several discussions with Suriya, he felt that the love story deserved something more realistic.
Venky also revealed that the ending chosen allowed both Suriya’s and Mamitha Baiju’s characters to stay true to their personalities. Mamitha’s character continues to hold on to hope, while the audience is left to imagine what happens next.
Venky also revealed that creative choices, including the sport associated with Suriya’s character, were deliberately designed to feel fresh and different. These aspects and minor changes in the script gave the film a distinct appeal, says Venky.
Looking back, Venky Atluri believes the open ending was the right decision, as it helped Vishwanath & Sons stand apart from typical romantic dramas and gave audiences something to think about long after the film ended.
