A major box office clash could be on the cards in Tamil cinema if Dhanush’s upcoming film Om sticks to its reported October 16, 2026 release date.
The film is currently in production, and reports suggest that the makers are looking at October 16 for the theatrical release. However, this would put Om just a day after Rajinikanth’s much-awaited Jailer 2, which is scheduled to release on October 15.
Such a clash would be a huge one, considering the star power of both films. Jailer 2 has Rajinikanth in the lead and is directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, while Om stars Dhanush and Mammootty and is directed by Rajkumar Periasamy.
However, industry buzz suggests that Dhanush and the Om team may try to avoid a direct clash with Jailer 2. The team is reportedly looking at discussions with Netflix, as the film’s existing OTT agreement is said to be one of the reasons behind the current release-date situation.
If the OTT arrangement can be changed, Om may be pushed to a later date.
For Dhanush, avoiding a clash with Rajinikanth could also make sense on a personal level. Dhanush has always shared a strong bond and admiration for the Superstar, and a direct clash with his “Thalaivar” may not be something he would want.
For now, the October 15-16 weekend remains a potentially explosive one for Tamil cinema. If both films finally release together, it could turn into one of the biggest box office clashes of 2026.
