Ahead of Panjaa’s re release on September 2 for Pawan Kalyan’s birthday, director Vishnu Vardhan sat down with Gulte Pro’s Ram Venkat Srikar for an interesting conversation about the film, its making and the creative choices that made it stand apart.
Vishnu recalled that his first meeting with Pawan happened without even having a proper story in mind. Their common interest in guns became an instant talking point, helping the director and actor connect quickly. That meeting eventually became the starting point for Panjaa.
Interestingly, Vishnu revealed that he wanted to present Pawan in a completely different way. Instead of going for loud hero elevations, he focused on the actor’s personality, attitude and screen presence, building a character who spoke less but carried immense power.
The director also opened up about the difficult decision to leave Billa 2, which he was originally committed to doing with Ajith. With the schedules getting complicated, Vishnu had to make a tough professional call and chose Panjaa, while acknowledging Ajith’s understanding of the situation.
Vishnu said loyalty was one of the key traits that shaped Panjaa’s protagonist. He built the character around the idea that a powerful man does not need to make noise. The same philosophy reflected in the film’s subtle action blocks and restrained hero elevations.
The director credited writer Abburi Ravi for the film’s sharp and concise writing. He recalled how they avoided unnecessary dialogues and instead relied on looks, gestures and small lines to create memorable moments. Even the action sequences were designed to maintain the film’s classy and controlled tone.
Fifteen years later, Vishnu still considers Panjaa one of his favourite films despite its theatrical result. The director’s revisit comes at an interesting time as the film returns to theatres, giving fans an opportunity to experience Pawan Kalyan’s stylish action drama once again on the big screen.
