Just a day before the release of the Hindi remake of Drishyam 3, the film has hit a legal hurdle. Chennai-based film production house Rajkumar Theatres has approached the Madras High Court seeking to stop the film’s release on October 2nd, alleging that its rights have been violated.
Producers Sripriya and her husband Rajkumar Sethupathy claim that they have the first right of refusal for any Indian remake or adaptation of Drishyam 3.
According to Rajkumar Theatres, The Drishyam 1 and Drishyam 2 were made after obtaining an NOC from them. However, the producers claim that they were not given the first right of refusal for the Hindi version of Drishyam 3.
The producers have also raised objections to Tamil and Telugu dubbed versions of the Hindi film that are set to be released on OTT platforms. They objected to these releases, claiming that they fall under infringement of their rights.
It can be noted that the same producers had earlier approached the court over the proposed OTT release of the Telugu-dubbed version of the Malayalam Drishyam 3, seeking compensation for what they claimed was an infringement of their rights. They have now approached the Madras High Court over the Hindi remake version on similar grounds.
As per reports, the issue came up for an urgent hearing in Madras High Court on Tuesday, September 29. However, the High Court adjourned the proceedings to October 1, allowing the makers of the Hindi film to file their counter-affidavits. More details are awaited.
This is certainly a major shock to Ajay Devgn’s Drishyam 3. The film also features Tabu, Shriya Saran and Jaideep Ahlawat in prominent roles. Stay tuned.
