Bollywood Hero Asked to Leave India After Joining CJP Protests

Bollywood actor Imran Khan, best known for films such as Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na and I Hate Luv Storys, has been issued a notice by Mumbai authorities directing him to leave India by October 28, 2026. This was because the actor was recently seen joining the ongoing protests in Mumbai by the Cockroach Janta Party demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The said protest took place in Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan on October 10.

The actor, who has been away from films for a while, has been back in the spotlight since he made an Instagram post of himself being detained by the Mumbai police, captioned “Apparently I’m going for a drive”. A “childhood crush” of many, this post of Imran Khan immediately became a hot topic of discussion among the protesting youth. He was detained briefly alongside other protesters, including his partner, Lekha Washington.

Following the incident, former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya approached the Gamdevi police station, seeking action against Imran for participating in the demonstration despite being a foreign citizen. Somaiya reportedly questioned whether the actor’s participation violated the conditions governing his stay in India.

According to reports, the actor, who is the nephew of Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan and an American citizen, has been accused of violating immigration rules governing foreign nationals participating in political activities in India. According to police officials, foreign nationals are restricted from participating in political protests and certain political activities on Indian soil.

The notice has brought renewed attention to the restrictions applicable to Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders and other foreign nationals engaging in political demonstrations. However, the precise legal grounds cited in Imran’s individual notice have not been fully detailed in the public reports available so far. With the October 28 deadline approaching, the next steps in the case will depend on the actor’s response and the decisions taken by the relevant authorities.
