Coastal city Vishakapatnam, fondly referred as Vizag by locals, has been making impressive strides on all counts ever since the NDA government led by TDP supremo Chandrababu Naidu came to power in 2024. Besides attracting crores of investments in the technology sector, the city is set to emerge as one of the favourite tourist destinations in South India by adding numerous new attractions.
According to the latest reports, Vizag will soon get Andhra Pradesh’s first lighthouse museum. An agreement for this notable development was agreed upon between the Vishakapatnam Port Authority and the Director General of Lighthouses and Lightships. The land to house this museum will be allotted within the old lighthouse areas in port premises.
Union Minister for Ports and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal announced on Monday that a total of 75 lighthouses will be developed as tourist destinations across the country and Andhra Pradesh with second largest coastline likely to have more similar museums in the coming years.
“The first Lighthouse Museum of Andhra Pradesh in Vizag is envisioned as a centre for maritime education, heritage preservation and tourism promotion, further strengthening lighthouse-led tourism along India’s eastern coast,” he said while addressing the last session of Indian lighthouse festival 3.0.
Several tourist attractions are coming up in and around Vizag to tap into the growing potential for tourism due to the huge influx of visitors. Recently, the longest skywalk of the country was set up in Vizag when a cantilever glass bridge was opened to public.
As it transforms into a technology hub in the next few years, Vizag is likely to witness a spurt in the tourist activity due to the cosy ambience along the coast. The state government with the support of centre is making all possible efforts to make the city a vibrant centre of culture and tourism.
