Bhama Kalapam 2 Movie Review

Bhamakalapam(2022) was a surprising success from AHA, a movie that served as a decent comeback for Priyamani. Today its sequel has been released. Let’s see whether this film recreated the magic or not as its predecessor.

Story:

Anupama( Priyamani) and her husband, Mohan (Pradeep Rudra) move to a new flat in the hope of a new life. Anupama tries not to interfere in other people’s work as it causes her enough trouble in the first part but destiny has other plans for this part. Anupama’s culinary skills push her to have her own restaurant and participate in a big cooking competition. However, the trophy attached to it holds a conspiracy that changes Anupama’s life, leaving her with nothing but a choice of a heist that she should pull off at any cost.

Writing and Direction:

The charm and gimmicks that worked in the first part were missing here clearly, this is also because of the repetitive feel the narration gives, and the key twists feel dated.

The idea of planning a heist around a trophy with an ordinary housewife doing extraordinary things might’ve sounded cool on paper but on screen, the translation got lost in weak dialogues, weaker performances, and weakest narration.

Abhimanyu Tadimeti who striked well in the predecessor couldn’t repeat the same feat in this sequel. There are comedy scenes that work here and there and even some thrills feel decent but for the larger part, his writing seemed very convenient at times instead of convincing. Even direction lacked focus as he failed to extract good performances from artists like Brahmaji etc. Some shots had problems with light focus, coming from platforms like AHA one expects better production values and better shot compositions.

Technical departments:

Editing by Viplav Nyshadam could’ve been better rhythmic, the flow of the cuts feels jarred at times. The music by Prashant Vihari was okay. The cinematography by Deepak Yaragera was average, the lighting hit some lows in a few shots.

Performances:

Priyamani gave her best to make this movie sail but at times even she looked clueless in the proceedings. Actress Sheerat Kapoor was wasted in a negative character. Pradeep Rudra didn’t manage to make his presence felt. Saranya’s role could’ve been written better than a simple bystander.

Negatives:

1) Tedious screenplay
2) Unimpressive twists
