The death toll in the house in Albany, United States, has risen to two with a second Indian national from Andhra Pradesh succumbing to burn injuries, according to the Indian mission. The house fire occurred on December 4.
The deceased has been identified as Anvesh Sarapalli, a native of Tadepalligudem in Andhra Pradesh. He died on Saturday, a day after 24-year-old Sahaja Reddy Udumula, an Indian student, died while undergoing treatment for critical burns in the same incident. The Consulate General of India in New York expressed deep sorrow over the demise and said that it got in touch with Sarapalli’s family who moved to Kukatpally in Hyderabad.
Sahaja and Anvesh were among the four people inside a house near Quail Street when police and firefighters reached the place, following information about the fire. All victims were rushed to the Albany Medical Centre Hospital for treatment by the Albany emergency medical personnel.
Albany firefighters had a tough time in dousing the flames due to gusty winds blowing during the operation. The residence was completely engulfed in flames.
Sahaja Reddy Udumula from Uppal in Telangana, had completed her post graduation from University at Albany and was working in the city. She died of organ failure after suffering 90 per cent burns. Over 13 residents, including many students at the University of Albany, were displaced due to the blaze.
