Amid ongoing crackdown by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers, a 37 year old American citizen was brutally shot by the federal agents on Saturday in Minneapolis, triggering widespread backlash and subsequent protests across the country.
The deceased who was shot dead was identified as Alex Jeffrey Pretti, an intensive care unit nurse. He was a resident of Minneapolis and posses a valid citizenship of the USA with no criminal history. He also holds a valid gun licence as per preliminary reports. The video footage of the incident that has gone viral since contradicted the claims of federal officials who stated that Alex Jeffrey approached the border patrol agents with a handgun.
This is the second shooting in Minneapolis in less than three weeks after a similar incident that took place on January 7th when Renee Nicole Good, a 37 year old woman, was killed by ICE agents in a firing encounter. Authorities claimed that the victim used her car as a weapon.
As the news about the second killing went viral, tensions flared up among the local communities with large number of people gathering and protesting against the atrocities of the ruthless immigration authorities in the name of crackdown.
Braving the inclement weather conditions, thousands of residents united to demonstrate slogans against the federal crackdown. The locals have called for law enforcement to leave Minnesota immediately.
Minneapolis officials said they were investigating the shooting incident and urged the public to remain calm and retract from the area. They deployed tear gas on a growing crowd of onlookers. “We ask the public to remain calm and avoid the immediate area,” the City of Minneapolis said in a post.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump defended the immigration enforcement and reacted on the shooting incident. He attacked the Democratic leaders of Minnesota for misleading the public. He also said the man killed was armed with a fully loaded gun and alleged that he wanted to shoot at ICE agents.
