After USA, Canada has the largest population of Indian immigrants because of ample job opportunities and good number of educational institutions for higher studies. Unfortunately, a disturbing pattern is causing irrational fear among Indian settlers there from the past couple of years as there is an alarming rise in cases of violence and hate crime on South Asians, especially Indians.
As per the latest reports, three Indian origin persons were killed in Canada in the last seven days and all of them appear to be a part of targeted violence on immigrants by the locals. While two of them were killed due to homicide on March 13, another one lost his life in a group clash on the night of March 14.
The victims were identified as Birinder Singh, Davinder Singh and Gurkirat Singh Manocha. All three Indians belong to Punjab state and went to Canada to pursue higher education. While Birinder was shot while driving on a highway South of Leduc along with his friends who immediately alerted the police and took him to hospital, Davinder was killed in a random shooting at his workplace at North Battleford.
Gurkirat Singh Manocha was fatally injured in an altercation at the Charlie Lake Boat ramp at around 11 pm on last Friday. He was later run over by the group of assailants and was declared dead despite emergency intervention of the local police.
This is not the first time that Indians have been attacked in Canada over racial hate. Ever since the diplomatic ties between the two countries strained over the killing of a Sikh separatist two years ago, there have been frequent incidents of assault and murder of Indian students.
In December 2024, three Indians were brutally murdered in a suspected targeted killing. Over the last two years, several individuals lost lives due to gang wars all over the Canada and the latest incident highlights the rising atrocities on Indians.
