Indian-Origin Teen Creates History As UK’s Youngest Mayor

Twentythree-year-old Tushar Kumar was elected as the new Mayor of Elstree & Borenhamwood on May 13, 2026, and made history as the youngest ever Indian-origin Mayor in the history of the United Kingdom.

Tushar Kumar, representing the Labour Party, has been the councillor before being elected as the Mayor. His appointment was given consent during the Council’s annual Mayor Making Ceremony.

Tushar won the appreciation of the local residents for his public service and strong support to community initiatives.

Many of the locals look up to him as a youth icon. Speaking after the election, Kumar recalled that he was first elected as a councilor at the age of 20 while studying Political Sciences at King’s College in London.

Age should not come in the way to serve the people and bring about a positive change in the society, he said. He hoped that his appointment as the mayor would motivate more youth to play an active role in local democracy and community engagement.

Kumar said his mother, councilor Parveen Rani, a former Deputy Mayor, has been a source of inspiration to him which encouraged him to enter politics.
