Why Are Indians Suddenly Facing Racism?

Indian diaspora spread all over the globe and contribute to the economies of various countries by working in MNCs and setting up businesses. With their hardworking attitude and dignified behaviour, Indian immigrants earned the respect of people across the world over the decades. Especially in countries like the USA, Canada and Australia, the percentage of Indian origin individuals is very high.

Despite all this, Indians have not been immune to racist slurs and xenophobic attacks in some parts of the world. Previously, such discrimination was seen only occasionally, and mostly from fringe groups. This toxic culture was not prevalent in mainstream society, which is why millions of Indians comfortably settled in foreign countries.

Of late, however, the situation appears to have changed drastically, with Indians repeatedly finding themselves facing an unprecedented wave of racist tirades from locals in various countries. Even US President Donald Trump resorted to controversial remarks by reportedly calling India a “hellhole country.”

In a shocking pattern, incidents involving racial discrimination against Indians are increasing day by day, with countless videos capturing abuse by locals surfacing frequently on social media. In recent times, several incidents where Indians faced unnecessary provocations have come to light, sparking outrage among people across the world.

A latest video in which an Indian couple was attacked verbally by an unidentified US citizen is currently going viral on social media. The man questioned the couple about whether India is better or the US. The couple respectfully answered that both countries have different advantages. When the husband mentioned that their family lives in India and that they came to the US to explore the world, the man asked why they were in America if India was so incredible. The stranger then hurled abuses and shouted at them to leave America.

Netizens condemned the abusive language and behaviour of the stranger, and the disturbing video has triggered a huge debate about why hatred against Indians appears to be growing suddenly in recent times. Many people started tagging US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who recently downplayed Trump’s remarks and said that only a few “stupid people” show racial discrimination against Indians, while America as a whole welcomes immigrants.

This incident has also highlighted an ongoing social media trend, where several influencers in the US repeatedly target Indians in public spaces for engagement farming. Many are trying to create the impression that Indians are taking away opportunities from Americans.

Not just in the US, similar incidents have also been reported in the UK and Australia in recent times. It is quite surprising that Indians are suddenly facing such attacks at a time when several foreign countries are tightening immigration laws.
