In order to make quick money, some Indian students are resorting to illegal ways to survive in foreign countries and subsequently landing behind the bars. Quite a few incidents involving Indians in such crimes have been reported in recent times.
As per the latest reports, a 22 year old Indian student has been arrested in the USA for allegedly orchestrating a scam by posing as an FBI agent. The accused identified as Parth C Patel has been caught in a sting operation by Chicago Police after a resident of the local village complained about losing $40,000 in a cyber scam.
Parth C. Patel has been charged with theft by deception and attempted theft by deception. The victim was duped over a phone call by an unidentified suspect who made him believe that his Apple Account has been hacked.
His call was then transferred to the accused Patel who masqueraded as an FBI officer and demanded the sum to unlock the Apple account of the victim.
The victim then handed over the amount to an unidentified individual on April 17. But, the scam didn’t stop there. Patel again called the victim and demanded another $28,500 more for further investigation. This when the police set up a trap to catch the culprit behind the entire scam.
Patel personally went to collect the additional cash and was nabbed by the investigation team. He was charged with a Class 2 and Class 3 felonies.
