ChatGPT has become a key part of the investigation into the shocking murder of an Indian origin mother and her teenage son in Massachusetts. Authorities say 17 year old Arjun Aravind had used ChatGPT and the internet to explore disturbing ideas and fantasies about killing his family before the deaths.
Arjun has been charged with two counts of murder in connection with the deaths of his mother, Sudha Venkatesan, 45, and his younger brother, Siddharth Aravind, 14. The two were found dead inside their Acton home on August 11.
According to investigators, Arjun’s online activity had raised concerns before the killings. Officials said he had been using ChatGPT to search for theoretical ideas or fantasies involving the killing of his family. Some reports also said he had explored dark fictional stories involving family members.
Police were alerted after Arjun’s father could not contact his wife and children. Officers later found the mother and son dead inside the house. Arjun had left the home in his mother’s car and was found by police the following morning in a parking lot in nearby Wayland.
The ChatGPT detail has now become a major focus of the follow up investigation because authorities are looking into Arjun’s behaviour and online activity before the alleged killings. However, the exact role, if any, that the AI conversations played in the crime remains a matter for investigators and the courts.
The case has also triggered wider questions about how AI tools can be misused by people who are already exploring violent thoughts. The investigation is continuing, and authorities have not said that ChatGPT itself caused the alleged crime.
