USA: Two Indians Face 71 Years Jail For Smuggling Fake Medicine

Indian nationals in USA are repeatedly making headlines for committing serious offences despite the fact that there is zero tolerance for wrongdoing there. Now, two Indian origin individuals are charged by a US federal court in Florida over allegations relating to smuggling of fake medicines from China to USA.

According to the United States Department of Justice, two Indians named Swapnadip Roy and Vicky Ramancha allegedly imported thousands of counterfeit units of the popular diabetes and weight-loss drug into America. The fake medications were sold to local US distributors at deep discounted prices to make fast money.

Investigation revealed that the accused individuals obtained fake Ozempic directly from suppliers based in China between July 2023 and April 2024 and then copied genuine product packaging, user inserts, and box labels carefully so American buyers would think the drugs were real.

Even after the US FDA seized fake shipments in December 2023 and issued public warnings, the men continued their smuggling operations illegally. Federal agents tracked down Swapnadip Roy in Italy, where local authorities arrested him based on an Interpol notice before extraditing him to the US.

Roy appeared before a US court and pleaded not guilty to all charges brought against him. Meanwhile, Vicky Ramancha is absconding. If convicted on all legal counts in court, each of these accused could face a maximum prison penalty of up to 71 years as per US laws.
