Indian And 4 Others Killed By Pirates In Somalia

Maritime tragedies and accidents have become more common nowadays and many Indian sailors have lost lives due to unfortunate circumstances in the past few months.

In another similar case, an Indian sailor was among five crew members who were killed by armed pirates on board a hijacked fuel tanker off the Somalia coast. As per reliable sources, pirates have shot five sailors dead after they have hijacked the vessel named MT Honour 25 and kept under their control since April this year.

The tragic incident happened right before African local security forces launched a military rescue operation to recapture the vessel. Pirates attacked the vessel as it was holding thousands of fuel barrels.

The victim was identified as Mohammed Tanweeruz Zamaan from India. He was working as cook in the vessel. Four other crew members suffered injuries during the shooting, including another Indian citizen and three Pakistani sailors.

The attacked vessel had a total crew of 17 members from different nationalities like India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar. Armed pirate groups kept the ship captured for several months in waters off the Somali coastline demanding high cash ransoms.

The Indian High Commission and foreign ministry officials are checking the safety of all surviving Indian crew members.
