What A Moment! Hyderabad Lady Becomes Sydney Mayor!

The Telugu community had been travelling abroad extensively for the last couple of decades, and we have been witnessing several success stories where Telugu diaspora had been holding positions of power abroad.

No, we have the case of Telugu-origin lawyer Sandhya Reddy who has been elected mayor of the Strathfield Council in Sydney, Australia.

Going into the story, Sandhya Reddy hails from Mallareddygudem in Mominpet mandal of Vikarabad district and is a close relative of Chevella MP Konda Vishweshwar Reddy.

She studied at Osmania University and Stanley College before moving to Australia in 1991. She later established herself as an immigration lawyer and became active in social and political affairs.

Sandhya was first elected as a councillor in local elections in 2021 and 2024 and later was elected deputy mayor in September 2023 and held the post for a year. She again became deputy mayor in September 2025 and continued in the position until her election as mayor. She was elected by fellow councillors at the council’s general meeting on Tuesday.
