US Scraps 540-Day Work Permit Extension, Indians On Edge!

The Donald Trump’s administration has been giving restless nights to foreigners, especially Indians, with a series of harsh immigration measures in the last one year. In what could be another big blow, the US government has decided to officially end the 540-day automatic work permit extension for immigrants.

Till, immigrant workers on H-1B could legally stay on their jobs for up to 540 days while their green card and work authorization renewals were stuck in processing phase. Because of this long wait periods, this automatic rule kept people safe from losing their jobs.

Now that protection is completely gone, H-1B holders will face loss of jobs immediately after the term ends. This sudden policy change creates panic among thousands of H-1B visa holders and foreign workers waiting for paperwork renewals.

Without the long extension window, any delay in visa processing means employees must stop working immediately once their current card expires. The only positive aspect in this new policy update is that international students on F-1 visas and OPT are not directly impacted by this specific change

Legal experts warn that this will cause massive chaos for tech companies and foreign employees alike. Many workers might face forced gaps in employment or even be pushed out of the country if their renewals do not arrive on time.

Previously, the grace period of 60 days for H-1B, L-1, or O-1 visa holders who lose their job has been scrapped. With recent crackdowns on H-1B sponsors and PERM programs and now this sudden decision to do away with the automatic work extension period, the pressure on the immigrant community is at an all-time high.
