Three Indian nationals have been killed after a fire broke out inside a multi-family residential building in the city of Bochum, Germany. The names of the victims are not yet revealed but they are found to be a 25 year old man and two women aged 26 and 27 years.
After the incident, police have arrested a Romanian national who lived in the same apartment building. He was taken into custody on Wednesday under strong suspicion of murder and arson after interrogation.
Investigators are examining if the suspect set the deadly fire on purpose or started it accidentally during a conflict. The deadly blaze started early Tuesday and firefighters arrived at the scene immediately. However, they faced huge difficulty because heavy flames swept rapidly up through the main stairwell.
Five other residents suffered severe smoke inhalation and were quickly rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical care. Unfortunately, all three Indians succumbed to injuries and died.
The terrible tragedy has sent shockwaves across the Indian community. The Indian embassy in Berlin and consulate officials are coordinating closely with German police to assist the families of the victims.
