Trump Proposes Name Change, But Sundar Pichai Said ‘No No’

US President Donald Trump recently floated the idea of renaming some popular geographical areas like gulfs and oceans after America. He already renamed Gulf of Mexico as Gulf of America and Lake Ontario as Lake America.

But, his attempts to change Atlantic Ocean on maps got an immediate pushback from Google CEO Sundar Pichai unlike the previous modifications which were included after the US administration officially released an executive order for renaming them.

During a public rally, Trump revealed that he asked the tech chief to rename the Atlantic Ocean on Google Maps. However, Pichai firmly rejected the request by saying no to changing the famous ocean’s name.

Pichai reportedly told Trump that Google cannot simply change geographical names of international waters on its digital maps. When Trump asked, Pichai replied ” No No, This time I’m not doing it Sir, Oceans are different, sir. They cover a lot of countries. Please don’t ask us to do that.”

Trump shared this private conversation while addressing a crowd during an event in the United States. He joked about how Pichai reacted instantly to the bold demand without even thinking about it. People in the audience laughed as Trump described how the Google chief handled the situation with a straight rejection.

Earlier this month, Trump came up with the unusual idea while he was canvassing for midterms. He suggested that the U.S. should rename an ocean to “Trump Ocean” or “Ocean of the Americas” before the end of his term. The idea quickly sparked a big debate in the media and political circles.
