May 13: Vijay Sai Reddy Recalls History of Rajya Sabha

May 13 has a huge significance in the Rajya Sabha also called as the Upper House of Parliament. On 13th May, 1952, the first Rajya Sabha was held and the first sitting took place on the historic day. This “Second Chamber” of the Parliament of India, was later named as the Rajya Sabha, on 23August 1954.

Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, Chairman of the first Rajya Sabha session, talked about the Upper House on 13May 1952. The newly constituted “Council of States” sat together for the first time on this day which became a moment of pride and joy in the history of Parliament. Dr Radhakrishnan was India’s first Vice President from 1952 to 1962. So naturally, he became the first Chairman of Rajya Sabha who served for 10 long years.

Recalling this historic day, Rajya Sabha MP and YSRCP national general secretary Vijay Sai Reddy made an interesting tweet which caught the attention. Sai Reddy noted the importance of Rajya Sabha and why the Upper House was formed even after having Lok Sabha which was directly elected by the people. Sai Reddy reasoned that Rajya Sabha was formed so that Lok Sabha may not pass the bills in rush or haste. He added that Rajya Sabha was formed with the experts in various fields of all the states. Vijay Sai Reddy is the Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Commerce and Parliamentary Party Leader.
