The Telangana movement remains one of the strongest political sentiments in Telangana even a decade after state formation. It continues to influence public discourse and political strategy in the state. This becomes evident when we look at the recent political activity surrounding Telangana Congress leaders.
Last week, Andhra Pradesh deputy CM Pawan Kalyan made a vague comment stating that some Telangana leaders often praise the greenery of the Godavari districts and that this evil eye or Dishti has affected crop yield in recent times, particularly coconut plantations in Konaseema.
Initially, this remark did not attract much attention as many felt it was an inconsequential opinion. But suddenly, over the last few days, several Telangana Congress leaders including MLA Anirudh Reddy and MLC Balmuri Venkat strongly condemned the comment and even asked Pawan Kalyan to leave Hyderabad immediately.
Their statements were followed by more criticism from cabinet ministers Poonam Prabhakar and Komatireddy Venkat Reddy. Minister Venkat Reddy said he would not allow Pawan Kalyan’s films to release in Telangana unless he apologises, while Prabhakar made an even sharper remark.
He said, “The cyclones hitting Andhra Pradesh also have an effect on Telangana. But we are not blaming Andhra Pradesh for this. These are climatic conditions. It is surprising to see Pawan Kalyan unable to understand such a simple fact despite being a deputy CM. Either Chandrababu or Modi must respond to this dialogue from Kalyan.”
The timing of these reactions is significant because the Sarpanch elections in Telangana are set to begin on December 11.
The Andhra Telangana divide continues to be one of the strongest emotional sentiments in the state, and it appears that the Congress is utilising the Pawan Kalyan episode to reinforce this sentiment, according to a senior Janasena supporter.
Meanwhile, Pawan Kalyan’s fans on social media argue that he had no intention of hurting the people of Telangana. They also believe this vague comment does not warrant such a large scale political response.
However, the timing of the controversy seems to be more consequential than the comment itself, which appears to be the only logical explanation for the sudden political escalation.
