It has been close to 12 years since the bifurcation of United Andhra Pradesh, which resulted into independent Telugu states. But even to this day, there are certain cultural incidents that concern the twin Telugu states and here we have one such new incident.
Reputed Telugu operator and cultural spokesperson, Garikapati Narasimha Rao made a very interesting proposal while speaking about the possibility of renaming Andhra Pradesh.
By attending the Telugu Maha Sabha that is happening in Amalapuram, Narasimha Rao stated that Andhra Pradesh must soon be renamed as Telugu Nadu.
Garikapati pointed out that Andhra Pradesh is not a Telugu name by vocabulary and it is similar to North Indian states like Madhya Pradesh and Arunachal Pradesh, which have Hindi backing. He added that Andhra Pradesh must be renamed as Telugu Nadu much like Tamil Nadu as it has a lot more cultural significance.
Garikapati, even made an interesting revelation as he said, senior NTR had also aspired to see Andhra Pradesh as Telugu Nadu as he recalled the age old movement. He was of the opinion that Telugu Nadu has a proper Telugu sounding, and this is the optimal name for this state.
On the other hand, the renowned Telugu scholar pointed out that Telugu people are not as affectionate towards Telugu language as we see Tamil and Malayalam people. He said this is something that the Telugu population must change.
But the core point here is that the name Andhra Pradesh has been with the state for several decades, and there is no real public movement to alter the name now either. We have to see if this new momentum that has been started by Garikapati will catch on and eventually lead to a change of names which looks unlikely at this point.
