For a long time, now, there have been several apprehensions about the religious conversions that have been happening across the country and particularly in South India.
A significant portion of the members belonging to the scheduled caste and tribes have reportedly been influenced into other religions by certain vested groups. This matter has reached the Supreme Court now as a petition was filed against the same.
A short while back, the Supreme Court of India ruled that a person will not be eligible for Scheduled Caste (SC) status after religious conversion to a faith other than Hinduism, Sikhism, or Buddhism.
The Supreme Court said conversion to other religions leads to loss of SC status and related benefits and this verdict upholds the Andhra Pradesh High Court view that those converting to Christianity cannot retain SC reservation benefits.
This would also mean that a converted Christian cannot claim SC status and cannot invoke the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act. This could help in reducing the number of religious conversion, as people could be scared of losing the status once they alter the religion and switch to Christianity.
