The Amaravati capital project has been one of the key factors working against the YSR Congress Party. The fact that Jagan attempted to derail Amaravati with the three capitals proposal did not go well with the people of Amaravati or the public of Andhra Pradesh in general.
Ever since the resounding mandate in the 2024 elections, the YSR Congress has been gradually altering its stand on the Amaravati project. This shift is evident in the recent statements made by Jagan’s close aide, Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy.
Ramakrishna Reddy stated that the party is fundamentally against what he called the “graphical and imaginative creation” of Chandrababu Naidu, but not against Amaravati as a city or its people.
The YCP senior leader further alleged that Amaravati is largely a real estate driven project designed by Chandrababu for personal and political gains. He claimed that people close to Chandrababu purchased land at high prices to create an artificial boom, while actual development on the ground remains limited.
On one hand, Sajjala appears to be playing it safe by saying that Jagan is not opposed to Amaravati. On the other hand, he strongly criticises the project by branding it as a real estate venture. At the same time, he shifts the focus entirely onto Chandrababu instead of making a clear and direct statement about the project itself.
Chandrababu Naidu is widely regarded as the architect of Amaravati, and it is notable that Ramakrishna Reddy is taking a cautious stand on the project while targeting Chandrababu for political reasons. This lack of clarity has previously worked against the YSR Congress, and it appears the party is yet to fully address that issue.
