In politics, there are no permanent friends and no permanent enemies. It has the power change arch rivals into friends and make them strange bedfellows for obvious reasons. And, Tamil Nadu seems to be at the cusp of something similar if the latest whispers in political corridors are to be believed.
After Thalapathy Vijay’s stake to claim the new government was abandoned by the Governor due to lack of full majority, a shocking development that no voter of Tamil Nadu in his wildest dreams might have ever imagined is said to be up for discussion. That is none other than an alliance between DMK and AIADMK.
Call them speculations, rumours or reliable reports, whatever it may be, but secret back channel talks are said to be taking place between these long standing political rivals to form an alliance to keep Vijay out of power. This development may be beyond shocking, but political and media circles are buzzing with this news to keep the political scenario of Tamil Nadu more interesting and entertaining than ever.
While Vijay’s TVK won 108 seats alone, the DMK and AIADMK alliances have secured 73 and 53 seats. Now, if both the DMK and AIADMK come out to forge an alliance by leaving their national parties, they will still don’t have absolute majority to cross the magic figure, giving scope for a more intense lobbying for remaining seats to win the power battle. Both parties would then need smaller parties for support if they want to achieve the goal of their alliance.

It is well known that Tamil Nadu’s political landscape has largely shaped by the long standing rivalry between the two Dravidian parties. The AIADMK was formed in 1972 after MG Ramachandran was ousted from the DMK by then-president M Karunanidhi following disputes over the party’s corruption allegations. Since then both parties fought for several decades as power see-sawed between them.
Vijay has undoubtedly ended the duopoly and created a history with his stupendous heist in these elections which hogged the limelight in the entire country.
