US President Donald Trump has thanked India after a road near the US Consulate in Hyderabad was officially named Donald Trump Avenue. Sharing a photo of the inauguration on his Truth Social platform, Trump called it an “unprecedented honour” and said he was the first US President to receive such a recognition in India.
The road, previously known as US Consulate Road in Hyderabad’s Financial District, was renamed by the Telangana government during the Freedom 250 celebrations, marking the 250th anniversary of American Independence. Officials said the move reflects Hyderabad’s growing importance in the India United States partnership, particularly in technology, business, aerospace, and defence.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by US Ambassador Sergio Gor and Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, who unveiled the new signboard. The state government said similar naming initiatives are being planned to showcase Hyderabad’s global identity and attract international investment.
However, the decision has also sparked political debate. Leaders from the BJP and CPI(M) criticised naming a public road after a foreign political leader, while the Telangana government defended the move as a diplomatic and symbolic gesture to strengthen ties with the United States.
