A fresh controversy erupted in the Rajya Sabha after CPM MP John Brittas accused BJP MP Sushmita Dev of making an objectionable remark against him during the proceedings.
Brittas alleged that he was referred to as a ‘lungiwala’ and said the remark was not just a personal insult but also an insult to the culture and identity of South India.
The issue quickly turned into a heated exchange in the Upper House, with Brittas objecting strongly to the alleged comment.
Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan also took serious note of the remarks and expressed his displeasure over the language used during the proceedings.
Brittas argued that members of Parliament should maintain dignity and respect for different regional cultures while participating in debates.
The controversy has now triggered a political debate over the kind of language used inside Parliament and whether remarks targeting a person’s regional identity should be allowed during House proceedings.
