One Successful Year for the Blockbuster Scheme!

The Stree Shakti free bus travel scheme has completed one year and it has clearly become one of the important welfare schemes of the NDA government.

There has been some criticism of the scheme in a few places, but overall the negative talk does not appear to be very strong. The main opposition is coming from auto drivers, who feel that free bus travel has affected their daily income.

At the same time, the government is giving Rs 15,000 every year to eligible auto drivers. This has helped reduce the impact of the criticism to some extent. While auto drivers have their own concerns, the scheme has directly benefited a large number of women.

For women, especially those who regularly travel for work, education, shopping and other personal needs, free bus travel has become a useful benefit. Many women are now able to travel without worrying about the daily transport cost.

This is where Sri Shakti has given the NDA a political advantage.

In the last one year, YCP has not been able to build a strong counter narrative against the scheme. Instead of turning the issue into a major political problem for the government, the opposition has struggled to convince women that the scheme is a burden or a failure.

The biggest political takeaway is the growing connect between the NDA and women voters. When a welfare scheme directly saves money for families and women can see the benefit every day, it becomes much easier for the government to build goodwill.

There can be genuine concerns about the impact on auto drivers and public transport, but the political reality is different. The benefits are being experienced directly by women, while the opposition has not been able to effectively challenge the scheme.

States like Karnataka and Telangana have also implemented similar free bus travel schemes for women. However, the implementation and public response in Andhra Pradesh appear to be more successful, making Stree Shakti a bigger political and welfare success for the NDA.

After one year, Sri Shakti appears to be more than just a free travel scheme. It has become an important welfare programme for the NDA and could play a major role in influencing women voters in the coming years.
