Andhra Pradesh has taken a major step in agriculture and food processing with the launch of India’s first non-GMO, high-expansion popcorn maize hybrid seed at Musunuru in Eluru district.
The hybrid seed was launched at the Gourmet Popcornica factory in Musunuru by Vice President of India C.P. Radhakrishnan, Andhra Pradesh Governor S. Abdul Nazeer and Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu.
The initiative is the result of a collaboration between Preferred Popcorn, USA, and Gourmet Popcornica India. The company has also established what is described as Asia’s biggest popcorn processing unit in Andhra Pradesh.
Speaking at the event, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu said there was “no looking back” for the maize farmers of Musunuru who enter into an MoU with Gourmet Popcornica.
He said the project would create new opportunities for farmers by connecting agriculture with food processing and value-added products.
Naidu thanked Vice President CP Radhakrishnan for attending the event and said his presence reflected his concern and affection for farmers. He also thanked Governor Abdul Nazeer for participating in the programme. State Ministers Nara Lokesh, Atchannaidu and Parthsarathy were also present at the event.
Chandrababu Calls for Agricultural Innovation
Chandrababu Naidu called upon innovators and entrepreneurs to bring revolutionary changes to agriculture.
He said farmers and their families should look beyond traditional farming and explore opportunities in the food-processing sector. He encouraged them to develop end-to-end solutions, from cultivation and processing to value addition and marketing.
The Chief Minister said such initiatives can help farmers move up the value chain, increase their incomes and create new rural employment opportunities.
The Musunuru project is being positioned as an example of how agriculture, technology, research and food processing can come together to create new opportunities for farmers in Andhra Pradesh.
Chandrababu Recalls Pattabi Ramarao’s Political Roots
CM Chandrababu Naidu recalled Gourmet Popcornica Managing Director Pattabi Ramarao’s political roots. “Pattabi Ramarao comes from a family with a long association with politics, agriculture and farmers. His grandfather S.B Pattabhi Ramarao served as a Minister in the Central Government. Another family member, S.B.P.B. Satyanarayana Rao, served as Minister of State for Agriculture during the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. The family has also been associated with the sugar industry and has worked closely with farmers over the years,” said Chandrababu Naidu speaking at the event.
Focus on Farmers and Research
Gourmet Popcornica also showcased its research and development activities through a video. The video showed how open agricultural fields are being converted into high-yield hybrid testbeds, with farmers and the company’s technical team working together.
It highlighted preliminary yield trials, the company’s breeding programme, harvesting and other stages of the seed development process.
The company aims to develop popcorn maize varieties with better expansion and improved yields, while creating a stronger link between farmers and the food-processing industry.
