YSR Congress Does Not Want Local Elections To Happen?

On one side, we have seen YS Jagan Mohan Reddy repeatedly warning his leaders to give a tough fight in the local bodies elections. He even gave them a threat that they would not get an MLA ticket in 2029 if they allowed unanimous elections to happen in their seats.

While Jagan is trying to put up a brave face on one side, it appears that YSR Congress is worried about these elections and wants them to be avoided at any cost.

YSR Congress approached the High Court saying that the elections can not happen when the SIR process is going on in the state.

In the petition filed by YSR Congress State General Secretary Lella Appi Reddy, he sought to halt the elections, arguing that the voter list revision process remains incomplete and that the polls are proceeding based on the old list.

However, experts clarify that the objections raised by the YCP lack merit.

There is no rule that mandates suspending elections simply because a special revision of the voter list is underway. Conducting elections using the existing voter list based on previously established qualifying dates is legally valid.

It is a surprise that YSR Congress is attempting to stall the election schedule by citing these procedural matters as a pretext.

Failure to conduct local body elections within the constitutionally mandated timeframe poses a risk of the state losing out on thousands of crores of rupees in local body grants from the Central Government.

But then, YSR Congress is worried that its image would take a severe beating if it could register bare minimum results in these elections.

The party was trying to establish that there is severe anti-incumbency against the Government. Probably, it is worried that the election results may prove otherwise.
